Deep Tissue Massage is a compendium of over 50 massage techniques that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fiber's of the muscles, tendons and fascia.
I’ve learned that Deep Tissue massage is used to release chronic muscle tension through slower strokes and more direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles not with the grain. Deep tissue massage helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue. Deep tissue massage usually focuses on more specific areas and may cause some soreness during or right after the massage. However, if the massage is done correctly you should feel better than ever within a day or two.
Benefits include:
Reduce pain
Improve mobility; increase range of motion (ROM); restore ease of movement
Reduce muscle hyper tonicity, tension, and spasm
Reduce scar tissue and other fascial adhesions (which can impair both circulatory and nerve function in addition to creating mechanical restrictions)
Promote circulation (of both blood and lymph)
Reduce ischemia (by releasing hyper toned muscles and reducing fascial adhesions, thereby improving circulation)
The vast number of today's "chronic" muscle disorders are, in fact, quite reversible. Low back pain(Sciatica), joint problems, spasms, bone displacement, nerve disorders, paralysis, and numerous crippling diseases are not only preventable 90% of the time, they often require only 3-5 therapy sessions to eliminate the symptoms causing what is most often referred pain.
Actual manipulation is a short, concentrated transverse (cross-fiber) movement with a penetrating action applied directly on individual muscles, tendons, or ligament fibers. This manual therapy is done with the base of phalange, forearm, epicondyle, and elbow. It induces hyperemia (increased blood flow) which speeds-up healing.
